Clarence is a welcoming and multicultural city, celebrating our varied heritage and cultural backgrounds.

The city’s rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and communities make it a unique place to live, work, and thrive. Whether you’ve lived here for generations or just arrived, we foster a welcoming spirit that celebrates diversity in every corner.

Diversity, equity and inclusion are at the core of our values which drive the goals, plans and actions laid out in the People Friendly City – Strategic Plan.

To raise awareness and promote inclusion, Clarence has joined together with Brighton, Glenorchy, Hobart, Kingborough, and Sorell councils to launch the We Stand Together Against Racism  campaign. This initiative makes a public stance against racism in all its forms and aims to demonstrate how everyone has a role to play in stamping out racism in our communities.

A community shaped by many cultures

Clarence thrives because of the people who call it home. As a local council, we are committed to fostering inclusion and understanding through projects, programs, and events that celebrate our multicultural community.

In 2021 we began developing the Reconciliation Action Plan, which sets out the strategic framework and mechanism for meaningful action by working with members of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community on several important cultural heritage projects.

Most recently these include the Welcome Plaque unveiling at council chambers, the opening of the takara limuna trail and truth-telling journey through the Richmond Bicentenary commemorations.

Embracing diversity and building Connections

From the languages spoken on our streets to the flavors in our restaurants, Clarence reflects the stories and traditions of people from all over the world.

Our multicultural identity is woven into a series of programs such as:

Welcome Lunch project

In 2025, we launched the Welcome Lunch Project inviting new migrants and members of the community to join in conversation about culture over a meal in Clarence. The lunches include guest speakers covering a variety of topics from belonging, and inclusion to how we express and celebrate culture, and feel safe.
