Clarence City Councillors have voted at the October 9, 2023 council meeting to put the proposed Tasmania AFL/AFLW High Performance Centre in the Rosny Parklands (formerly Rosny Golf Course) out for community consultation.

The consultation will provide council with a strong understanding of the Clarence community’s views about having a High Performance Centre in Clarence generally, fully located at the Rosny Parklands specifically, at dual sites located at Rosny Parkland and Charles Hand Park, or at other sites within the City that may be identified as suitable for the purpose.

Clarence City Council Mayor Brendan Blomeley said there are significant benefits to the community to having either a High Performance Centre in the Rosny Parklands or in Clarence, as well as pursuing council’s original plan for the Rosny Parklands site in establishing a cultural and wild park.

“As we heard tonight, there are strong arguments for both sides of the debate,” said Mayor Blomeley.

“Putting the decision of a High Performance Centre out for community consultation means we will know unequivocally what the community sentiment is around the idea and this will guide council on making decision that best serve our community.

“As I have stated from the beginning, council has been open to investigating a High Performance Centre in Rosny Parklands through the City Heart Plan, however no decision to proceed with the proposal will be made without community support.

“If following community consultation a majority of the community are not supportive of having a High Performance Centre in Clarence, then Council will provide that feedback to the State Government.

“If the community feedback is they would like the High Performance Centre in Clarence, but not in the Rosny Parklands, council will continue to investigate other viable options within the city.”

Consultation on the AFL/AFLW High Performance Centre is open between Tuesday, 10 October and Tuesday, 7 November. Members of the community can provide feedback though a short survey on the Your Say Clarence webpage, through a written submission to yoursay@ccc.tas.gov.au, or in-person at the Warrane Garden Springfest on Saturday, 21 October 2023.
